White Orchid Academy is more than just a sewing and design school; it's a tribute to my grandmother Ang Chay Huang, who opened her tailoring academy in 1959. Her pioneering spirit continues to inspire us as we teach our students the craftsmanship and artistry of tailoring. Our goal is to help you not only learn a valuable skill but also express your personal style by understanding yourself and your roots.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Hi! I'm Annie Chyr!
My journey didn't start on a runway; it began in elementary school recess. I was bullied relentlessly, hiding behind a bowl cut and ill-fitting clothes that I didn’t know how to style. I felt invisible, yet painfully exposed.
The summer before high school, I decided to flip the script. I raided thrift stores, taught myself to reconstruct garments, and completely overhauled my wardrobe. I discovered that clothing wasn't just fabric; it was a tool for shapeshifting. It gave me the power to rewrite my identity, highlight my story, and control how I presented myself to the world.
The Industry & The Reality:
That passion led to an internship with a Houston fashion designer and eventually, acceptance into both Parsons and FIT on full-ride scholarships. But life is complex; unable to afford the housing costs in NYC, I made the difficult choice to stay in Houston.
I didn’t let that stop me. I graduated in the top 10% of my class at Houston Community College with an AAS in Fashion Design. I spent years working deep in the industry. From technical sample making to PR, marketing, and building successful fashion brands from the ground up, I learned that you don’t need a prestigious address to be successful; you need the right skills, the right grit, and the right guidance.
Why I Teach:
In 2024, my grandmother passed away. In the wake of that loss, I stepped into teaching, and I realized it was my natural calling.
I founded this academy to be the mentor I wish I had. I teach so that you can find the power to love yourself fully, and in turn, share that love outward. Whether you are a cosplayer, a designer, or a hobbyist, my goal is to prove that you don’t need a university degree to master this craft. You just need a community to support you along the way.
